Move Out of California

About

An independent guide — and a free way to compare movers.

What we are

Move Out of California publishes practical, plain-language guides for people relocating from California to another state. We also offer a free service that connects you with up to three licensed interstate moving companies so you can compare quotes.

What we are not

We are not a moving company. We don't own trucks, employ movers, provide estimates, or transport household goods. When you hire a mover you find through us, your contract is directly with that mover.

How we choose partner movers

  • An active USDOT number, confirmed on the FMCSA website.
  • Active FMCSA operating authority (MC number) to transport household goods across state lines.
  • A review of the company's FMCSA complaint information.
  • Periodic re-checks — movers whose registration lapses are removed.

We encourage you to verify any mover yourself. Our guide on choosing an interstate mover shows how.

How we're paid

Our service is free for you. Moving companies in our network pay us for introductions to people planning a move. That payment never affects the price a mover quotes you, and you are never obligated to hire anyone.

Our editorial approach

Our guides are written by the Move Out of California Editorial Team. Where we cite costs, tax rules or other figures, we aim to use verified sources and update them as things change. Tax and legal topics are general information only — please consult a professional for your situation.

Move Out of California is an independent moving resource and free matching service. We are not a moving company and do not transport household goods. Moves are performed by independent, FMCSA-registered carriers.
