Drive or ship?
Driving saves the shipping fee but adds fuel, lodging, time off work and wear on your car. For long moves — Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas — or households with more than one vehicle, shipping is often worth comparing.
Open vs enclosed transport
- Open carriers are the most common and least expensive option.
- Enclosed carriers protect against weather and road debris and cost more — usually chosen for classic, luxury or low-clearance cars.
- Typical cost:
Preparing your car
- Verify the auto transporter's USDOT/MC registration on FMCSA.
- Wash the car and photograph every side before pickup.
- Remove personal items and toll transponders.
- Leave about a quarter tank of fuel.
- Note existing damage on the bill of lading at pickup.
Registering in your new state
Each state sets its own deadline for new residents to register vehicles and transfer licenses. Check your new state's DMV website shortly after arriving.
