Mover Safety Checklist
Before you hire
- Get at least 3 written estimates after a video or in-home survey
- Look up each mover's USDOT and MC number on FMCSA (safer.fmcsa.dot.gov)
- Confirm active authority for household goods and that name/address match
- Ask: are you the carrier or a broker? Who will actually move my goods?
- Avoid large cash deposits; pay by credit card where possible
- Receive "Your Rights and Responsibilities" and the "Ready to Move" brochure
Paperwork
- Estimate type is in writing: binding, non-binding or binding not-to-exceed
- Order for service matches your estimate and dates
- Valuation choice (released value or full value protection) is on the bill of lading
- Never sign blank or incomplete documents — keep copies of everything
Moving day
- Be present for the inventory and check condition notes
- Truck is marked with the same company name and USDOT number
- Keep documents, valuables and medications with you
Delivery & after
- Non-binding estimate: you can't be required to pay more than 110% at delivery
- Check items and note any damage on paperwork before signing
- File loss/damage claims in writing within 9 months
