How to Verify a Mover: USDOT & MC Number Lookup

Every interstate household-goods mover must be registered with FMCSA. Use the tool above to open FMCSA's official record for any USDOT or MC number, then work through the checklist below.

What to check on FMCSA

  • USDOT status shows as active.
  • Operating authority is active and authorized for household goods.
  • Entity type: carrier (transports goods) or broker (arranges with carriers).
  • Legal name, any "doing business as" name and address match what the company told you.
  • Insurance is on file.
  • Complaint history in FMCSA's household goods complaint data.

Beyond FMCSA

  • Ask for a physical address and confirm it exists.
  • Search the company name plus "complaints" or "scam".
  • Check with your state attorney general and the Better Business Bureau.
  • Make sure the name on your estimate matches the name in FMCSA records.
