Moving Valuation and Insurance: Released Value vs Full Value Protection

Released value (basic)

Released value is the minimal option, offered at no additional charge. The mover's liability is limited to 60 cents per pound per article. A 10-pound laptop worth $1,000 would be covered for just $6. You must specifically choose it in writing on the bill of lading.

Full value protection

With full value protection, the mover is liable for the replacement value of lost or damaged goods, up to the declared value of your shipment. The mover may repair, replace, or pay the replacement cost. There is a charge, and deductible options may lower it. Items of extraordinary value (often over $100 per pound) may need to be listed separately.

Third-party moving insurance

You can buy separate moving insurance from an insurance company. Check your homeowners or renters policy first — some cover items in transit. Read exclusions carefully.
